STAND WITH MUSLIM NEIGHBORS
Attempts to divide and intimidate fail once again
Thonotosassa, FLA. ― Leaders of the Hernando County Progressive Caucus visited the Daarus Salaam mosque in New Tampa on Sunday to show solidarity with our Muslim neighbors in the wake of Friday’s anti-Muslim terrorist attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand. A diverse set of speakers representing a multitude of religious denominations and local government leaders shared messages of love, compassion, and support in the face of continued attacks by white supremacists and other hateful extremists.
The right to worship freely and in peace is a core American value which cannot be compromised. Just two years ago, Daarus Salaam was attacked in an intentional arson – one of 18 such incidents documented in Florida from 2015-2018. As such attacks grow in both frequency and ferocity, it is the obligation of all people who cherish our fundamental rights to make it clear that attempts to intimidate and divide us have failed, and will fail.
Perhaps the best articulation of the Hernando County Progressive Caucus’s message to our Muslim friends and neighbors, and to all victims of hate, came from Tampa City Councilman Luis Viera: “we’ve got your back.”
